An Icon Through the Decades

The Mercedes-Benz 280 SL is more than a beautiful vintage automobile, it is one of the defining luxury roadsters of its era. Introduced in 1974, the 280 SL joined Mercedes-Benz's R107 generation, which had debuted three years earlier and would ultimately remain in production for an extraordinary 18 years. Unlike the earlier W113 "Pagoda" 280 SL it replaced, the R107 represented a new direction for the SL, combining open-top motoring with greater comfort, refinement, and safety. Mercedes-Benz engineered the R107 with innovations such as a fuel tank positioned above the rear axle for improved collision protection, a heavily padded interior, and safety-focused controls and steering components. With its long hood, compact passenger compartment, broad grille, and clean, understated lines, the R107 established a shape that would become instantly recognizable as a Mercedes-Benz SL.
Beneath the hood, the 280 SL featured Mercedes-Benz's 2.8-liter M110 fuel-injected inline six-cylinder engine, a sophisticated dual-overhead-cam design producing as much as 185 horsepower. Rather than emphasizing outright performance, the 280 SL delivered the smooth power, composed handling, and relaxed high-speed cruising that defined the SL as a true grand tourer. Produced from 1974 through 1985, the 280 SL became one of the longest-lived members of the R107 family.
Today, the R107 has become an established modern classic, admired for its durability, distinctive styling, and unmistakable Mercedes-Benz character. It comes from an era when the company became known for engineering cars to exceptionally high standards, with substantial construction and attention to details that can still be appreciated decades later. The 280 SL adds its own character to the R107 formula, pairing the elegance of the SL roadster with the smooth, responsive nature of Mercedes-Benz's classic inline-six engine. Driving one today is about more than getting from one place to another. With the top down, the three-pointed star ahead, and the sound of the straight-six beneath the hood, every journey offers an opportunity to experience one of Mercedes-Benz's most enduring designs as it was meant to be enjoyed: from behind the wheel.
